How LinkedIn addressed societal stigma to support the success of ex-offenders
A year after being released from jail, an estimated 80% of ex-offenders cannot find employment. Over 40% of those who are struggling to start over will commit crimes again within a year. In an effort to increase the chances, LinkedIn commissioned research that showed hiring ex-offenders could increase the UK GDP by £2 billion. In collaboration with the social company Inside Out and the creative agency VCCP, LinkedIn launched a rehabilitation program that addresses the stigma associated with incarceration by providing former offenders with access to job and skill-based training.
The group came up with a four-week mentorship program to assist eight young offenders in starting the first streetwear company founded by ex-offenders in the UK. Technical skills like screen printing and design were taught to the group, along with business and soft skills like networking and building a professional network.
