ChatGPT hits ‘one million users in an hour’ after Ghibli style images spark frenzy; rolls out image gen for free users
OpenAI’s ChatGPT has experienced an unprecedented surge in user engagement following the release of its image generation feature to free-tier users. This update has enabled a viral trend of creating images inspired by Studio Ghibli’s distinctive art style.
Initially available only to paid subscribers, the image generation capability was extended to free users on March 29, 2025. This expansion led to ChatGPT attracting one million new users within just one hour, a milestone highlighted by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
The feature allows users to transform their photos into visuals reminiscent of Studio Ghibli’s renowned animations, sparking widespread enthusiasm across social media platforms. The overwhelming demand did, however, result in temporary server challenges and usage limitations for free users.
This surge in popularity has significantly boosted ChatGPT’s user base and revenue. Analysts note that Microsoft, a major investor and cloud service provider for OpenAI, stands to benefit substantially from this growth.
While the feature has been celebrated for its creative potential, it has also sparked discussions about copyright implications and the authenticity of AI-generated art. Notably, Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki has previously expressed reservations about AI-generated images.
In response to the overwhelming demand, OpenAI has implemented measures to manage server load and ensure a stable user experience. Despite these challenges, the company continues to innovate, recently securing $40 billion in funding from a SoftBank-led initiative to advance AI research.
